Bottega Veneta’s iconic Intrecciato weave never loses its depth or elegance with time.
But the very first place where age reveals itself is always the edge coat.
The long wallet that visited our atelier this time had been used for many years, and the edge coat along the perimeter had worn off, peeled, and turned white in several areas.
With a vivid orange interior, the damaged edges stood out even more clearly.
Before Restoration
- Edge coat extensively worn away
- Raw leather edges fully exposed
- Slight distortion and flaring along the perimeter
- Multiple sections with whitening and surface lift
Although the leather exterior still held its luxurious character, the damaged edges dulled the overall impression of the wallet.
Lederraum’s Edge-Coat Restoration Process
1) Complete Removal of Damaged Edge Coat
We don’t simply touch up worn areas.
Partial recoating tends to crack again later, so we first remove all lifted edge coat to create a clean base.
2) Edge Preparation & Reinforcement
Bottega long wallets have relatively thick edges, so the exposed leather grain was reinforced and sanded for a smooth, even surface.
3) Multi-Layer Edge Coating
Instead of applying a thick coat in one pass, we used a thin-layering method—
apply → dry → sand → re-coat, repeated multiple times.
This ensures durability, clean lines, and a finish that closely resembles the original.
After Restoration
- All lifted and peeled areas fully cleaned and rebuilt
- A smooth, solid edge line restored
- Vivid orange interior and deep navy exterior now contrast sharply once again
- Overall structure looks firm, neat, and refined
Rather than just “fixed,” the wallet now carries the crisp definition of a new piece.
